U.K. scientists develop ‘lab-in-a-backpack’ to offer fast, affordable COVID-19 testing

uncategorized

British researchers have developed a COVID-19 testing lab that fits in a backpack. This will provide low-income countries and remote communities with a more affordable and accessible way to detect the virus. In a new study peer-reviewed Wednesday Science magazine PLOS ONEScientists at Queen Mary University of London have shown that a lab approach with a backpack is as effective as the commercial COVID-19 test in detecting positive infections. To improve the COVID-19 inspection option, researchers used low-cost hardware, including a centrifuge made from a recycled computer hard drive called CentriDrive, for a total of US $ 51 (about 64 CAD).
